Designing digital tool for the TV, radio and on-demand broadcast stream planning.
National Broadcast Company of Finland (YLE) wanted to renew their solution how to plan the broadcast stream on every channel they have. They wanted to be more efficient and needed to have a digital tool to replace analogical ways of working when planning the broadcast streams.
I was responsible for mapping the user needs for the broadcast planning tool, concept design, and designing the user interface and visual layout. As a team leader, I was responsible for the design of the new service and the work of the implementation team.
First things right - right things first
I started by using co-design methods to find out end-user needs and involved the stakeholders into the design work. I made different prototypes and organized some usability testings. Based on the insight I made some iterations until we were on a safe side to start the software development.
I designed the user interface and visual layout of the publication planning tool in accordance with YLE’s brand guidelines. We also created a totally new way of working together with the end-users and other parties that are involved with the broadcast planning. I introduced this completely new tool and work process widely inside YLE organisation by holding demos in the different stages of the product’s development.
Throughout the conceptualization, design and testing phase, we worked in close cooperation with the entire software development team, sparring ideas and best practices. We jointly started the actual development work in an agile manner as soon as the necessary concept validations were done and the cornerstones of the service to be designed were clear. We agilely iterated the implementation during the development work whenever we received more customer feedback through prototyping.
