Creating a real mobile solution for studying and learning

In this project, I was responsible for ux-, ui- and visual design, concept design, user research and user testing, and prototyping. Project was happening in 2021.

Studying should be easy wherever and whenever you want

Learning and studying has been changed because of this remoteness we all know. People expect possibilities to study and learn new things whenever they want. Even though the majority of users prefer mobile devices, most learning platforms are still primarily designed for computer screens.

That was the starting point for this project which was run by LAB University of Applied Sciences. Our team (Mia Saario, Maarit Johansson, Sanni Koskimies-Chiba and me) started to investigate the case further.

First things right - right things first

We started our work by creating a project plan. Time frame was quite tight as we needed to have a background study and application prototype ready in just two months.

During the process we used Lean Service Creation canvases to find out the business aspects, marketing opportunities, feature requirements and so on. We interviewed the necessary LAB representatives and conducted an evaluation for the applications that are currently in the market.

Concept clarification and application prototype

Design process was pretty straight forward. I was responsible of creating the app interfaces, UX and visual guidelines. Business wise we focused both on degree students, those who want to have some further professional education and people who want just study new things for fun.

The application prototype includes lot of modern ways to study. Users can consume audio and video content and application guides users through the sections and courses. It’s easy, innovative and modern-looking app which suits to all age groups.

Users can handle individual courses or even bigger entities by using the app only. There’s no need for desktops anymore.

LAB representatives were super happy with the outcome and our application concept was very much liked. Looking forward to see it rolling out in production at some point in the future.
